Drawing Blood

Posted on March 31st, 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

Drawing Blood is a 1993 novel, the second novel from horror author Poppy Z. Brite. The novel concerns Trevor McGee, a cartoonist, and Zachary Bosch, a hacker, and their arrival in Missing Mile, North Carolina, a fictional town featured in Brite’s previous novel, Lost Souls.

When a man set himself on fire in the Los Angeles, California location of a commercial mailbox company, copies of this novel were saturated with the smell of burnt flesh. They were sold by book dealer Barry R. Levin as collectibles. [1] David Streitfeld, “A Real Stinker: Book Dealer’s Offering Is Under Wraps for a Reason,” Washington Post, August 29, 1994.

Slave auction

Posted on March 31st, 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

A slave auction or charity slave auction is a method of fundraising for charity. They are fun events where volunteers (the “slaves”) are “sold” to donors in auction style, with the proceeds going to charity.

The slaves then have to do tasks for their respective “owners” for a certain length of time, usually embarrassing or menial but not unreasonable; the exact definition of reasonable varies from one group to another but usually excludes anything illegal, immoral or against the slave’s religion/conscience; nudity or sexual favours (but see Slave auction (BDSM)); and anything where the effect would last beyond the specified length of time. Typical tasks are either essentially dares (as in the game Truth or Dare) or manual tasks like carrying the owner’s bag for him/her or doing the dishes.

Serre’s property FA

Posted on March 31st, 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

Property FA is a property of mathematical groups. Jean-Pierre Serre defined property FA in his book Arbres, amalgames, <math>SL_2</math> (published in English, translated by John Stilwell, as Trees).

A group G is said to have property FA if every action of G on a tree has a global fixed point.

Serre shows in Trees that if a group has property FA, then it cannot split as a free product with amalgamation or HNN extension. In particular, a finitely generated group with property FA has finite abelianization.

It is a theorem of Watatani that Kazhdan’s property (T) implies property FA of Serre.
